Video compression and optimization reduce file sizes and adjust resolution for optimal display on target screens without excessive bandwidth consumption or storage overhead. Video optimization proves more complex than image optimization due to temporal compression (inter-frame encoding), audio track management, and codec selection considerations.

Multiple tools address video optimization needs, with web-based and desktop options offering different trade-offs between convenience and feature depth. Two representative tools include VideoSmaller (web-based) and Handbrake (desktop application for MacOS/Windows).

Web-Based Compression: VideoSmaller

VideoSmaller is browser-based video compression without software installation. This approach suits occasional optimization needs or environments restricting local software installation.

Width-Based Scaling: Resolution adjustment uses target width specification. A 1920x1080 display works best with 1920-pixel width targeting, with height calculated automatically based on original aspect ratio.

Compression Level Control: Low compression level settings preserve more video quality at the cost of larger file sizes. Higher compression reduces file size but introduces quality degradation through increased quantization and detail loss. Experimentation reveals optimal compression/quality balance for specific content types.

Audio Track Management: Optional audio removal reduces file size for silent video displays, eliminating unnecessary audio stream overhead when sound playback is not required.

Resolution Configuration: Dimension settings define output resolution (1080p, 4K, custom) matching target display specifications. Resolution reduction decreases file size and encoding complexity while potentially sacrificing visual detail.

Codec Selection: H.264 codec choice aligns with TelemetryOS optimization with broad device compatibility and efficient encoding. H.264 delivers good compression ratios with acceptable quality trade-offs for digital signage applications.

Audio Track Handling: Audio track removal or transcoding configures output audio characteristics. Complete audio removal eliminates stream overhead for silent displays, while audio transcoding adjusts codecs or bitrates for size/quality optimization.

Cross-Platform Consistency: Handbrake is consistent functionality across operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux) for standardized workflows regardless of platform choice. This uniformity supports team collaboration across heterogeneous environments.
