Selecting Televisions

Choosing a display for digital signage

Digital signage display selection involves considerations around display size, resolution, and the distinction between consumer and commercial displays. Display characteristics directly impact content visibility, reliability, and deployment success.

Display Size

Most digital signage applications use 55" or larger displays. Larger displays typically provide better visibility and impact for digital signage environments. Video walls serve applications requiring exceptionally large display areas. Video wall configurations combine multiple displays to create seamless large-format presentations.

Resolution

While TelemetryOS adapts seamlessly to any display size and aspect ratio, the resolution you choose significantly impacts the visual quality of your content. We recommend selecting TVs with at least 1080p (1920x1080) resolution to ensure your digital signage maintains the visual appeal and detail necessary for maximum impact. Older TVs operating at 720p resolution or lower typically lack the clarity and sharpness that modern digital signage demands.

4K digital signage displays operating at 3840x2160 resolution deliver exceptional visual quality that can truly elevate content presentation. However, some digital signage players experience difficulties when rendering animations and video content at this higher resolution. Therefore, thorough testing of digital signage players with 4K displays becomes essential before committing to this resolution for deployments.

1080p (1920x1080) displays represent the recommended minimum resolution for digital signage. Modern content and graphics require this resolution baseline to maintain visual clarity and sharpness. 720p or lower resolution displays lack the clarity standards expected in contemporary digital signage environments.

4K Displays

4K displays (3840x2160) deliver exceptional visual quality for digital signage content. Some digital signage players encounter performance limitations when rendering animations and video at 4K resolution. Testing players with 4K displays before deployment verifies compatibility and performance.

Consumer vs Commercial Displays

The choice between consumer and commercial displays represents one of the most important decisions in your selection process, with each category offering distinct advantages and limitations.

Consumer Displays

Consumer displays are standard televisions available through general electronics retailers. These displays provide wide availability and lower cost compared to commercial alternatives. Consumer displays work effectively for budget-constrained deployments or installations with limited operating hours. However, consumer displays have limitations in continuous-operation environments and professional applications.

Commercial Displays

Commercial TVs are purpose-built for commercial environments and represent a more robust solution for professional digital signage applications. While these displays typically cost about twice as much as consumer TVs of similar size, they provide several significant advantages that justify the investment for many applications.

Thin Bezels

Commercial displays typically feature very thin bezels around the edge, creating a more seamless and professional appearance. This design characteristic becomes particularly important when constructing video walls, where thick bezels would create distracting gaps between adjacent displays and compromise the overall visual cohesion.

Removable IR Control

Most commercial displays allow you to remove or disable the IR control functionality, providing better security and control in public spaces. This feature prevents unauthorized individuals from accessing display settings or changing content, ensuring your digital signage remains consistent and professional throughout its operation.

Daisy-Chained Display Ports

Many commercial displays incorporate Display Port connectors that support daisy-chaining capabilities, allowing you to connect up to four 1080p TVs to a single display port on your source device. This connectivity feature significantly simplifies deployment logistics by eliminating the need for specialized display splitters and reducing the complexity of your cabling infrastructure.

Designed for 24x7 Operation

Unlike consumer TVs that are designed for intermittent home use, commercial displays are specifically engineered to operate continuously, running all day, every day without performance degradation. This robust design philosophy positively affects both the warranty coverage and the overall lifespan of the display, providing better long-term value for commercial applications.
