Device Tags

Device categorization and organization through custom tagging

Device tagging in TelemetryOS categorizes and manages devices based on custom criteria, improving organization and efficiency. Tags support individual assignment, provisioning-based assignment, and bulk assignment for streamlined device management.

Tag Configuration

Device tags provide a flexible labeling system that enables targeted content distribution and fleet organization. Each device supports multiple tag assignments, allowing classification across different dimensions simultaneously—location, purpose, content type, or custom taxonomies specific to deployment needs.

Tags can be assigned and modified at any time through device configuration. The tagging system operates independently of device organization hierarchy, enabling cross-cutting categorization that supplements folder-based structures.

👍

Multiple tags per device enable multi-dimensional classification—a single device might carry tags for location (building_3), purpose (lobby_display), and content (corporate_content) simultaneously.

Provisioning-Based Tagging

Provisioning tokens support pre-configured tag assignments that automatically apply to devices during zero-touch enrollment. This capability eliminates manual tagging for large deployments where devices should receive consistent categorization based on their intended deployment context.

When provisioning tokens include tag specifications, all devices enrolled using that token inherit the assigned tags automatically. This automation ensures consistent categorization across device cohorts and reduces configuration overhead during scaled rollouts.

Tag inheritance from provisioning tokens occurs at device enrollment time. Devices retain inherited tags even if the source provisioning token is later modified or deleted, maintaining stable categorization over the device lifecycle.

📘

Use Case:

A retail deployment across 50 locations can use location-specific provisioning tokens (location_boston, location_chicago) to automatically categorize devices by site during installation, eliminating manual tagging of 200+ devices.

Bulk Tagging

The tagging system supports bulk operations for efficient multi-device categorization. Tag assignments can be applied to multiple devices simultaneously using copy-paste workflows, enabling rapid categorization of device cohorts without individual device configuration.

Bulk tagging operations preserve existing tags on target devices by default, adding new tags rather than replacing the existing tag set. This additive behavior enables progressive categorization where devices accumulate tags from different classification dimensions over time.

Multi-select operations combined with tag assignment enable fleet-wide categorization updates in seconds rather than hours. This capability proves particularly valuable during deployment phases, reorganizations, or when implementing new content targeting strategies across existing device populations.

📘

Example:

An organization can select all lobby displays across 20 buildings (using organization filter) and apply a new "corporate_announcements" tag in a single operation, instantly enabling targeted content distribution to that device category.
